Ranking Member Takano Vows to Fight for the Major Richard Star Act & Other Bipartisan Veterans Priorities

WASHINGTON – Today, House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Ranking Member Mark Takano issued the following statement after bipartisan opposition forced Speaker Mike Johnson to pull H.R. 9237, the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act, from consideration in the House of Representatives. This bill would have cut at least $60 billion from 1.5 million veterans' benefits over the next ten years.

“Today, Members of Congress heard veterans and Veteran Service Organizations loud and clear and rejected the largest cut to veterans' benefits in history.

The Taking Benefits from America’s Veterans Act would have been the largest reduction of veterans’ benefits in history. When servicemembers take their oath to protect and defend our country, we promise to take care of them when they take off their uniform. We should never consider breaking that promise to one generation of veterans to pay for benefits of another.

Now that it’s clear this bill is not viable, I urge my colleagues in the House to sign the Major Richard Star Act Discharge Petition. We are only 3 signatures away from making real progress for wounded veterans. We can finally end the wounded veterans’ tax and honor the contract to deliver the benefits veterans earned.”
