WASHINGTON-Today, after Chairman Mike Bost’s and Congressman Jack Bergman’s July 1, 2026, letter requesting the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) investigate the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) was made public, House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Ranking Member Takano issued the following statement:

“Chairman Bost crossed a line when he formally requested the Department of Veterans Affairs investigate the VFW after the organization opposed his Take Benefits from America’s Veterans Act. VFW's opposition to his bill is based on its members' real concerns about losing earned benefits, not grounds for investigation. Taken together, these actions look less like oversight and more like retaliation against a veterans’ organization for opposing his bill. On the same day he issued a statement last week accusing the VFW of promoting violence because of a political cartoon, the Chairman and Rep. Bergman quietly sent a letter to Secretary Collins asking the agency to review VFW’s accreditation and requested VA investigate VFW’s commercial licensing arrangements. Nothing in the public record suggests the VFW no longer meets VA's accreditation standards. Disagreement over legislation or a political cartoon criticizing budget cuts is not what those regulations are intended to address.

I find it hard to believe that Chairman Bost, who decried weaponization of government under the Biden administration, doesn’t see the irony in now asking the Trump administration to weaponize a federal agency against veterans. But this isn't the first time Republicans have weaponized committee authority against VSOs. They 'investigated' Disabled American Veterans (DAV) last year for the same reason—disagreement on policy. First DAV. Now the VFW. Whenever a veterans organization disagrees with Chairman Bost, he reaches for his gavel.

Chairman Bost’s actions are clear retribution against those who disagree with him. The Constitution protects the VFW's right to advocate for its members, even when that advocacy challenges the Chairman's agenda. I urge him to reconsider his request and reflect on his commitment to open debate and the very freedom of speech that veterans fought to protect.”
