WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Mark Takano (D-Calif.), lead Democrat on the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, released the following statement after the House Republican majority passed its Rules package for the 118th Congress:

“Today’s vote on the Rules package is proof that the new Republican majority is more than willing to renege on our country’s promise to care for our veterans,” said Congressman Takano. “Just as I warned last Congress, House Republicans are following through on their promise to hollow out veterans programs by pitting veterans' funding against other domestic priorities. The ‘CUTGO’ procedure in the Rules package negatively impacts VA programs that improve veterans’ quality of life – including cuts to healthcare and benefits for the 3.5 million newly eligible toxic-exposed veterans included in my Honoring our PACT Act, which is now law. The Republican Rules package aims to sabotage VA just as millions of veterans are set to enter the system and harm our veterans by reneging on the promise America has made to fund their healthcare and benefits."
