WASHINGTON— House Veterans' Affairs Committee Ranking Member Mark Takano issued the following statement following President Trump’s planned dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education.

"The Trump Administration's decision to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education will directly and adversely impact veterans and their earned benefits. Student veterans take out student loans to support the cost of college at nearly comparable rates to non-veterans. Student veteran borrowers have seen their loan payments skyrocket under President Trump. The GI Bill, a benefits program established to assist qualifying veterans and their families with higher education payments, depends on the Department of Education to ensure predatory institutions do not steal benefits. Closing the Department of Education will result in the greatest weakening of GI Bill oversight since its creation in 1944. The only winners today are predatory schools looking to steal veterans’ benefits,” said Ranking Member Takano.
