WASHINGTON- Today, Ranking Member Mark Takano of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee issued the following statement in response to VA’s cancellation of the Veterans Affairs Servicing Purchase (VASP) program.
“The Trump Administration turned its back on veterans at risk of losing their homes. With the sudden shutdown of the VASP program, as many as 80,000 veterans and military families have been stripped of a vital assistance program established to prevent the tragedy of foreclosure. In case there was any doubt, no President has done more harm to veterans in their first 100 days than Donald Trump.
It is unconscionable that President Trump and Secretary Collins would suddenly terminate VASP without offering a viable replacement for veterans. Over the past year, VASP prevented more than 17,000 veteran foreclosures, dropping the number of finalized foreclosures to fewer than 10. But Donald Trump, Doug Collins, and Elon Musk have decided that veterans don’t deserve a second chance.
Making matters worse, VA failed to notify veterans or the organizations that serve them until it was too late. Just yesterday, my office heard from two veterans who scrambled to apply before the Secretary’s arbitrary deadline—only to learn they missed the window to save their homes. These veterans and tens of thousands more now face foreclosure and potential homelessness in President Trump's crumbling economy. Secretary Collins could and should reinstate VASP today before it’s too late,” said Ranking Member Mark Takano.
