WASHINGTON, DC – House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Ranking Member Mark Takano (CA-39) released the following statement after the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced it surpassed its fiscal year 2024 goal of housing 41,000 veterans, with over 43,000 veterans housed in the last 12 months:
“This is good news and gets us closer to our goal of ending veteran homelessness. I applaud VA and the Biden-Harris Administration for their continued commitment to preventing veterans from falling into homelessness and ensuring that in the unfortunate event a veteran becomes unhoused, that they are quickly and safely rehoused. There is no simple solution to ending veteran homelessness, but we do know what works.
That is why I will continue advocating for reinstatement of the pandemic era authorities that provided emergency shelter, clothing, food, and rides to job interviews and medical appointments so that veterans experiencing or who are at-risk of homelessness can get back on their feet. We also know that recent changes to housing eligibility from the Department of Housing and Urban Development and Department of Treasury will help to ensure that veterans who need affordable housing can access it. I will keep working with our federal partners to provide congressional support and ensure we get even more veterans housed next year.”
