RIVERSIDE, CA – This week, House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Mark Takano (D-Calif.) welcomed Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Denis McDonough to his district for the first time to tour VA facilities and meet with veterans across Riverside and the greater Los Angeles area. In the Inland Empire, the pair met with leadership, staff, and veterans at the Loma Linda Heath Care System and the San Bernardino Vet Center, heard from student veterans at the University of California Riverside and Riverside Community College, paid their respects to our fallen heroes at Riverside National Cemetery, and met veteran homeless advocates with U.S. Veterans Initiative (U.S. VETS) at March Veterans Village. Later in the week, Chairman Takano and Secretary McDonough met with veteran leaders from Riverside, toured the West LA VA Medical Center with VA leaders, and spoke with homeless veterans currently living in the San Vicente encampment.

“I invited Secretary McDonough to the Inland Empire because I know our veterans and VA staff are doing great work here—it was a tremendous honor to have him tour the area with me this week,” said Chairman Takano. “By meeting with veterans across the district—including student veterans at UC Riverside and Riverside Community College and homeless veterans living outside the West LA VA—we held witness to their stories and refocused our efforts to ensure we fulfill the promises we’ve made to our veterans. I am more encouraged than ever that we can tackle the biggest problems facing veterans in the LA area, including the monumental effort to end veteran homelessness, and I look forward to my continued partnership with Secretary McDonough.”
