Chairman Takano Statement on Hearing Postponement: “Despite this, our critical oversight and legislative work will continue.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Mark Takano (CA-41) announced the postponement of all previously scheduled Committee hearings through May 1st, 2020 to mitigate the spread of COVID-19:

“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs has relentlessly worked to advocate for veterans and fulfill our oversight of VA’s response to this crisis. However, given the continued public health risk posed by COVID-19, the Committee will postpone all hearings currently scheduled through May 1st to help ensure the safety of our witnesses, Veteran Service Organizations and stakeholders, VA staff, and congressional staff.

“Despite this, our critical oversight and legislative work will continue. We will expand our effort to hold VA accountable and press for transparency throughout this crisis and ensure VA provides high-quality, timely care to America’s veterans. Already, we have successfully advocated for our student veterans and passed bipartisan legislation through the House to safeguard their benefits. Additionally, we urged the Treasury Department and the IRS to work with VA to ensure our most vulnerable veterans can receive their stimulus check without an unnecessary burden. 

“While the manner in which we conduct our business may have temporarily adjusted, forums may have changed, and communications have moved online -- our work fighting to ensure VA can deliver the best care and services to our veterans throughout this national emergency will continue.”
