Chairman Takano on Veterans Day: “We are doing more than saying ‘Thank you for your service’”

Washington, D.C. —  Today, House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Mark Takano (CA-41) released the following statement in recognition of Veterans Day:

“This Veterans Day, we are doing more for our veterans than simply saying ‘Thank you for your service.’ When I became Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, I vowed to match that thank you with action.

“100 years since Veterans Day first began, House Democrats have kept their promise to our veterans by holding more than 30 hearings and passing 24 bipartisan bills on suicide prevention, transition assistance, housing insecurity, and more.

“Together, we passed five bills to address the national crisis of veteran suicide and called for a nation-wide VA stand-down to ensure VA is prepared to care for veterans in crisis. We corrected a decades-long injustice and ensured Blue Water Navy Vietnam veterans can access the benefits they earned after being exposed to Agent Orange. We launched the Women Veterans Task Force and passed three bills to ensure the nearly 2 million women veterans can receive the resources and care they deserve. Tomorrow we have 9 more bills on the floor –  just another way House Democrats are getting results for all those that have served our country. 

“With more women, LGBTQ, minority, and Native American veterans than ever before, we need to ensure VA is ready to care for our increasingly diverse community of veterans—no matter their background or where they live. Today, and every day, I am committed to ensuring we do just that.”
