Chairman Takano on Memorial Day 2020: “It is our duty to mark this moment despite the uncertainty of our time.”

RIVERSIDE, CA – Today, House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Mark Takano (D-Calif.) made the following statement in recognition of Memorial Day 2020.

“As the nation continues to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, Memorial Day will look a little different this year—but it remains our solemn duty to honor our fallen heroes and mark this moment despite the uncertainty of our time. Throughout this crisis, the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, has worked diligently to ensure VA is fully equipped to carry out its first mission-- serving our veterans-- as we confront this unprecedented national emergency. We’ve worked to expand opportunities for student veterans, pushed VA to provide timely updates and information on their coronavirus response, continued to prioritize veterans’ mental health, and have been undaunted in our work to exercise our legislative and oversight functions.

“While the pandemic changes the way we recognize Memorial Day, it’s significance has never been more important. We must rightfully recognize those servicemembers who have demonstrated the highest form of selflessness – sacrificing their lives for this great nation. We are forever indebted to their bravery and courage and that of their families.

“This Memorial Day, my thoughts are with all of our fallen heroes.”
