Acting Ranking Member Takano Issues Statement Regarding Inspector General’s Report on Problems with Phoenix VA’s Consult Management
Washington, D.C. – Today, Acting Ranking Member Mark Takano released the following statement after the Inspector General released its report, “Review of Alleged Consult Mismanagement at the Phoenix VA Health Care System,” which details disturbing problems in the scheduling and administration of referrals for care.
“The Inspector General’s report on problems at the Phoenix VA reveals inexcusable failures in scheduling and management of specialty care appointments that consistently undermine veterans’ access to care. The suffering or death of any veteran due to mismanagement or delay of medical care is a profound tragedy that requires us to take immediate action.
“This year, the Department of Veterans Affairs updated its guidance for consult management. Those policies must be put into action without delay, and it is the job of this Congress to provide continued oversight and accountability that ensures veterans are receiving the care they need.
“There are more than 150 VA medical centers across the country, many of which provide excellent and timely care to America’s veterans. However, the consistent underperformance of certain facilities is a stain on the VA’s reputation and an affront to those who served this country with honor and distinction.”
